When I started university I thought that my professors would possess great objective knowledge that they would slowly bestow upon me. I have always been told to question my sources when writing papers, to avoid unofficial documents and use sites like Wikipedia solely as a means of gathering ideas if at all. This skepticism is too often limited to sources of information outside the classroom. Anyone who has read an old textbook from a course in the faculty of arts and social sciences will understand that our courseware is subject to temporal bias as well. Our professors are not immune to their personal opinions and the dominant ideologies of their fields. I have been both punished and praised for writing papers in which I argue against the ideas presented by my teachers. I respect the ones who are able to admit their potential for fallacy, especially the few who will take the time to re-explain their claims or point out the flaws in mine so that I may reassess them. The others should not be allowed positions in a university.
